Dying in water destroys/makes the toombstone not spawn

I was fighting a seaside Ice pillager outpoast, when I died to a freezing magic while swimming in the ocean. Then the game spawned me at the graveyard, but instantly tpd me to the Spawn when I came back to the graveyard and spoke to the Gravedigger, but it did not give me the option to tp back to the spot I died at.
