Losing a tome when shift clicking into enchanting table

My mouse is broken so sometimes it double clicks so I didn't notice this,what I assume to be a bug, until now.
So when you shift click a Tome of reversal into a enchanting table it rolls back the last enchants, if you click it in again before enchanting you get the message
"You can't use this item now, there are no previous enchantments to revert to!"
BUT it still eats the tome, losing it without actually using it.
If you pick up the book and try to click it in after using a tome already it doesn't consume the book only when shift clicking it in.
